In order to understand certain fears that I encountered during a residency I provoked an experiment in which I explored both the fictional narrative of Hesses Steppenwolf as well as my own notions of the liminal state. I do not consider the experiences that I encountered throughout the experiment as art in itself but rather a catalyst for the art making process. I designed a suit to help me establish a sense of character and to physically separate the experiences of the everyday routine of life in residence. The parameters for the experiment were that I was leave the isolated campus every night for three consecutive nights to walk into the thick of the forest until sunrise without the aid of a light or any other devise that would help to provide me a false sense of security. I fasted on water and tea for about week during this experiment. Im still processing what happened in the experiment suffice to say it was a lot. I created a video work also titled Steppenwolf based on the experience. I also plan on creating a performance piece based on the experience and similar themes.
